Building Up

December 2017

In summer 2017, I decided to formally organize Scriptorium Saturday as a 501c3 tax-exempt organization, and officially name it Scriptorium Poetry and Words, aka Sac Poetry).

During the whole process, I kept feeling in my heart an urge to return Sac Poetry to its roots: Serving people, particularly those who have experienced abuse and trauma, through the powerful work of poetry – and promoting self-confidence in all people through the work of poetry.

Returning to the Beginning

From 2014 – 2017, the work of Sac Poetry primarily focused on the opportunity for up-and-coming, as well as established, local poets, artists, musicians, writers, and other creators to present their creative work to the community.

In 2018, our focus returned to the root – promoting self-confidence in people – especially those impacted by abuse and trauma – through the work of poetry, and exploring unique approaches to poetry for those who enjoy the craft.

The Journey Now and AheadĀ

As we carry out this important effort, we encourage everybody who believes in this outreach to be a part of it!

Since the start of Sac Poetry, I have had the privilege of supporting any costs that arise in carrying out our events and outreach.

It would be a privilege to have you, also, join this journey through your gift of benevolence.

Here are the needs your benevolence serves:

Teaching Artists and Other Professionals

Bringing on teaching artists and other professionals to host poetry workshops and outreach efforts for our community. This represents our primary work. Your benevolence includes supporting teaching/performance/speaking costs, occasional travel and lodging, and other costs that may arise in bringing on a teacher/professional to lead one of our events.

Community Communication

Supporting our communications efforts. This includes assistance with our website and email services that communicate our workshops and events to the community, and other administrative needs.

Marketing has been a challenge for Sac Poetry, and does require a bit of time. I’ve attempted to manage the entire scope of our marketing and promotion, and have fallen very short. Our goal is to fund a dedicated marketing strategy for Sac Poetry to reach those who will be impacted by its work.

Event SupportĀ

This helps with refreshments, materials, and other items for our community events.

Sac Poetry has been blessed to host poets and other artists who have given generously of their time. We would like to extend a gift of benevolence to the performers who take the time to prepare, present, and perform at our workshops and events. Being an artist is a job just like any other.

Longterm Goal – Building

As you may know, for over three and a half years Sac Poetry has moved from location to location to hold its events. The libraries and other venues hosting us are always gracious, but the fact is the stability of a consistent location serves our community better. We aren’t, so much, looking for monetary donations to help fund a building, but a small donated space with basic amenities (electricity, heating, air, bathrooms, parking lot) to be used once a month. For more on this need, you can reach Executive Director Simone Youngblood at We’d love to talk with you!

If you feel you’d like to be a part of this journey, your benevolence for the above needs are tremendously appreciated. Feel free to forward your gift to:

Scriptorium Poetry and Words
4801 Laguna Blvd., #105-240
Elk Grove, CA 95758

(Regarding any donation, please note we are still working on our tax-exempt status!)

Thank you once again for your kindness towards this work of serving our community through the enriching power of poetry.
